The Norah Lambourne Design Award with the Royal Opera House
The Norah Lambourne Award, made to apprentices at the Royal Opera House was celebrated today. It was good to be able to meet again in person as there were three awards to give out for the years 2020, 2021 and 2022. Society Chair, Seona Ford and Society Archivist, Alison Hall made the presentations.
The winners were:
2019/20: Harry Clarke. Costume Tailoring Apprentice;
2020/21: Hermina Chance. Hair, Wigs and Makeup Apprentice;
2021/22: Danielle Patrick . Photography Apprentice.

Visit to the Mill at Sonning for a performance of Busman's Honeymoon
On Sunday, 12 June, close to 40 members gathered at the Mill at Sonning to see a performance of Dorothy L Sayers’ play, Busman’s Honeymoon, directed by Brian Blessed. A full report of the event will appear in the July Bulletin.
The Annual Dorothy L Sayers Lecture
This year, the lecture at the Essex Book Festival was given by crime writer Elly Griffiths at the library in Witham. Witham is where Dorothy L Sayers lived for many years until her death in 1957. A full report on the entertaining lecture given by Elly Griffiths will be given in the July issue of the Bulletin.
A virtual book tour of London: 28 June, 2022
This online event, ‘Burnt Books,: A Walk through the Flames of London’s History’ led by Alice Ford-Smith, will lead you through London before “making its way to the heart of Bloomsbury” (where Dorothy L Sayers lived and in which she set some of her fiction). Golden Age of Crime Conference, 22 & 23 June - Session on Sayers
We advertised this conference way back in April. For those of you who are interested, the timetable for this event is now available online. There is a special panel convened to look at DLS, entitled ‘New Sides to Dorothy L Sayers’ . Speakers are: Mary C Rawlinson, Jason Whittle and Jordan Welsh.
Society Bookmark Competition
The Society is holding a competition to design our Society bookmark. We invite you all to submit a design that promotes the Society and the works of DLS. Delegates to our Society Convention in August will be voting on the submissions and the design with the most votes will be the winner.
Rules:
1. Entry is open to members and non-members.
2. The aim of the bookmark is to promote the Dorothy L Sayers Society.
3. The design must be original and any images used must either have written copyright permission or be the entrant’s own.
4. Entries must be accompanied by an entry form and submitted either digitally or by post by the closing date of 15 July 2022. No entries received after that date will be considered.
5. Judging will be anonymous. The names of entrants must only be used on the entry form.
6. The designer of the winning bookmark will retain copyright for the design.
7. Entrants should note that the design may need slight alteration due to printing and size requirements but the winning designer will be consulted about any changes made.
8. Size guidance is 45mm-57mmW x 174mm-209mmL
9. The design must:
· show both sides of the bookmark, side by side, on an A4 page;
· include the Society’s website address;
· promote the Dorothy L Sayers Society;
· be original;
· not contain any information that could identify the designer;
· be received by the closing date of 15 July 2022.
